What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Could It Work for You?
If you've been carrying something heavy for a long time, a trauma, a memory that won't leave, anxiety that spikes out of nowhere, you've probably wondered if therapy could actually help. And if you've avoided it because retelling your story sounds unbearable, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is worth knowing about.
ART is one of the most effective trauma treatments available. It's evidence-based, it works fast, and it doesn't require you to talk through the details of what happened. Here's what it is, how it works, and who it's for.
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that uses guided eye movements to help your brain reprocess distressing memories and experiences. It was developed by Laney Rosenzweig in 2008 and has since been validated in multiple clinical trials for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief.
The "accelerated" part is real. Many people experience significant relief in just 1 to 5 sessions, compared to months or years of traditional talk therapy.
How Is ART Different From Regular Therapy?
Most therapy works by talking through what happened, identifying thought patterns, and building coping skills over time. ART takes a different route entirely.
In ART, you hold the memory in mind while your eyes follow the therapist's hand as it moves back and forth. This bilateral stimulation, similar to what happens during REM sleep, helps your brain change how it stores the memory. The goal isn't to erase the memory. It's to change how your body and nervous system respond to it.
The result: the memory is still there, but it no longer hits the same way. The charge is gone.
Do I Have to Talk About What Happened?
No. This is one of the most important things to understand about ART.
You do not have to narrate your trauma in detail. You don't have to describe what happened, relive it out loud, or explain it to your therapist. You hold the experience in your own mind while the bilateral eye movements do the work. Your therapist guides the process — you control what you share.
For people who have avoided trauma therapy specifically because they can't face retelling the story, this changes everything.
What to Expect in a First ART Session
Your first session starts with a brief intake. I will ask what you want to work on and gather some context about your history. You do not have to share every detail. ART does not require you to narrate your experience in depth, which is one reason clients who have found traditional talk therapy activating or overwhelming often respond well to it.
Once we identify a memory, image, or feeling to work with, I guide you through a series of eye movements while you hold it in mind. You will notice what comes up: sensations, emotions, images, without needing to explain or analyze. At some points, I will guide you through the voluntary image replacement process.
We always end with grounding. You should not leave a session feeling more activated than when you arrived. ART is designed to complete within the session, one of the features that distinguishes it from approaches where processing can spill outside the therapy room.
ART vs. EMDR: The Key Differences
Both ART and EMDR are evidence-based trauma therapies that use bilateral eye movements. Both work faster than traditional talk therapy. Both have real research behind them. Here is how they compare:
| EMDR | ART | |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions to results | Typically 6–12+ | Often 1–5 |
| Mechanism | Bilateral stimulation while revisiting memory | Eye movements + voluntary image replacement |
| Talking required | More verbal — you describe the memory in detail | Less verbal — you can process without narrating |
| Research history | 30+ years, WHO-endorsed | Newer (2011), NREPP recognized, growing fast |
| Availability | Widely available, many trained provider | Fewer trained therapists — harder to find |
| Best for | Complex trauma, multiple events, clients who want to understand their processing | Single-event trauma, fast results, clients who prefer less talking |
How to Find an ART Therapist in Minnesota — What to Look For
ART is a specific training. Not every therapist who lists "trauma therapy" on their profile is trained in it. When searching for an ART therapist in Minnesota, ask directly: Are you trained in ART? Is it one of your primary modalities, or something you use occasionally?
At Reflective Pathways, ART is central to how I work, not an add-on alongside twenty other approaches. I completed formal ART training and use it regularly with clients, which matters for how fluidly the sessions move.
